A street theatre play telling the story of the fantastic journey of Arlequin and Pantalone while fostering exchange between African and European artists.
"Harlequin and Pantalone set off on a quest: wealth for one and food for the other. After a long journey full of surprises and encounters, they come across an unexpected treasure that is neither money nor food: the Njangui."
Njangui is a Cameroonian tradition symbolising gathering and celebration. It embodies solidarity through sharing: whether in times of mourning, in the fields or in financial tontines, this practice highlights the importance of community.
The play's subtitle, 'Toujours ensemble' (always together), reflects the project partners' desire to encourage intercultural dialogue.
The project is first and foremost about human beings reaching out to other human beings to listen, share and put love at the centre of their interactions.
Junior Esseba, Cameroonian theatre director and project artistic director
This initiative promotes artistic exchange between Africa and Europe, bringing together about 20 actors and directors. Through a creative residency, meetings and performances, it raised public awareness of local and global issues.
In the residency, artists from five different countries - Cameroon, Germany, France, Spain and Italy - exchanged ideas on their practices, followed by a creative workshop in which the theatrical interventions in public spaces based on the various themes covered by the central theme of Njangui were developed.
After seeing the play, what really struck me was that the audience included young children who were absolutely delighted.
H.E. Filippo Scammacca, Italian Ambassador to Cameroon
The final outcome of the residency was a street theatre performance, which was performed in public spaces across three Cameroonian cities: Yaoundé, Ebolowa and Obala.
The project helped to strengthen mutual understanding between the members and create synergy despite cultural differences. It enabled them to meet the challenge of creating a theatre production combining various disciplines, such as dance, music, theatre and storytelling in a relatively short period of time.
